A path out of the order-taker model and into value-driven solution work.
AI is taking over the assembly in agency work: the drafting, building, producing and reporting that follows a pattern. Clients are starting to ask why they’re still paying for it, and for part of it they’re right. What AI can’t take is the judgment: what was never written down, what you learn in the room, and knowing when the model’s average answer is wrong for this client. That’s where agencies have always done their best work. It’s also the part most agencies have never been paid for directly, because it was buried in the hours.
Getting paid for it takes two things:
Clients judge the value they see against the price, never the price itself. So the work starts with the client talking about what they actually need, and every deliverable gets tied to it. With one agency I worked with, the onboarding call stopped being about what the client asked for and became the client talking about everything around the work.
Your clients can get the average answer anywhere. What they can’t get is depth in their world that the models don’t have.
We start with the Client Value Map, a half-day workshop where your leadership team scores and maps your top clients and sets a baseline. Then I work with your leadership team and your client teams, on real clients, on four moves:
Unbundle what no longer makes sense to offer, because the client can do it or a vendor’s software now cuts you out. You only need to move at your clients’ pace.
Decide which parts of the work you can be better at with the tools than your clients are, because you know how the work should be made and can judge what the tools produce. That window narrows as the models improve.
Make sure the client can tell your judgment from what ChatGPT told them this morning, and from what it will say tomorrow when they feed it your decks.
Develop deep expertise as an engine, not just an enabler, and decide which kinds you want to build.
Along the way we change how the work is priced: the assembly as a smaller, fixed line item, and the judgment on things the client can name, paid in phases as each one is delivered.
